Radu Afrim’s production is based on three dramas by Maurice Maeterlinck: Intruder, The Seven Princesses, and Interior. The common theme is death and the dreamlike mood associated with it. Afrim’s production falls into the category of the theatre of horror and the grotesque, in which the director activates an unusual acoustic and choreographic landscape and builds an atmosphere of fear. In each part, the protagonists’ fate is controlled by an invisible force. Death becomes the main character, always close, absent, yet very present, one that gently creeps into the soul, only to take control of it. It is also a socially relevant spectacle because, for quite a while now, we have been living under the threat of illness and death – terrified, stunned, in despair. The production is universally human, because these primal fears are deeply rooted and are bound to remain in us.
Last year, Radu Afrim presented Chekhov’s Three Sisters at the Kontakt festival.
