“Caritas. Two minutes of silence”
Idea and realization: Lies Pauwels
Premiere: March 27, 2010

“Caritas. Two minutes of silence” is authored by Lies Pauwels, a Belgian film director, well-known to Polish audience from the International Theater Festival CONTACT 2005, where she presented the performance “White Star” which won the Grand Prix of the Festival. Inviting the winners of CONTACT to realize performance in Wilam Horzyca Theater has become the tradition of Toruń stage. Lies Pauwels accepted the invitation, about her collaboration with the actors she says: “Everything they do and say is full of passion. And that is why I really enjoy working here. ”

The starting point to realize the performance “Caritas. Two minutes of silence” was the problem of the extreme: extreme behavior, situations, feelings: extreme violence, extreme hatred, extreme love, extreme acceptance, extreme religiosity, extreme honesty, extreme falsity, extreme loneliness, extreme suffering, extreme old age, extreme youth, extreme identification , extreme masculinity, extreme femininity, etc. In the performance, Lies Pauwels poses a lot of questions: Do all people try to escape from mediocrity, but find themselves in very extreme situations? Is nothing as it seems? Does this what is real imitate this what is false – or maybe it is a false imitation of the real? Is the truth the lie or is the lie the truth? Is it a beauty contest or a memorial? Do we seek the right answers to the wrong questions, or the wrong answers to the right questions? Do we need help to save our own life, or to finish the joke? Lies Pauwels, by provoking these questions, does not answer them. She hopes, however, that the answers will be as many, as many spectators will watch the show.

The performance is intended for viewers over 16 years old.

Starring: Małgorzata Abramowicz, Maria Kierzkowska, Anna Romanowicz-Kozanecka, Matylda Podfilipska, Mirosława Sobik, Jolanta Teska, Agnieszka Wawrzkiewicz, Łukasz Ignasiński, Sławomir Maciejewski, Niko Niakas, Michał Marek Ubysz
Duration: 1 hour. 50 min. (without a break)

From the review:

The play takes the form of partly a beauty contest, partly an audition to the popular television program “I have talent”, and partly also a psychodrama or even confession. (…) The modern world is shown here as the shallows dominated by stupidity and pop culture. The reality possessed by the cult of youth and beauty, absolutely devoid of empathy and compassion – the world of dehumanized puppets and mannequins. (Anita Nowak, Teatr dla Was, 28.03.2010)
