In his work, Ingmar Bergman focused on exploring the innermost recesses of the psyche of human beings finding themselves in extreme situations. He concentrated on those isolated from the outside world. He would place his characters on an 'island’ – locked in the web of family relations, in countries in a state of emergency. Thus held captive, you put your bonds to the test and, as if through a magnifying glass, observe relations that have been eluding you with all the hustle and bustle going on. Does forced confrontation with the other and with yourself give insight, or drive you to madness? Will you see yourself “as if in a mirror”? Will you have the courage to stand against yourself and the ultimate, face to face? Bergman is a guide to the time of the ‘quarantine’ involving confinement, isolation, insight and confrontation. He guides us through the transformation process, the intimate process of change, re-evaluation, and death. You gradually realize that you have found yourself within the time of death, death which cannot be identified, mourned or understood. Whether you like it or not, death needs representation. That is what art is for. Through representation, film, theatre, literature, and visual arts prevent a traumatic, hidden record of fear from surfacing. The artist is still looking for a language to tame the untamed. Art is still trying to overtake reality. This is the duty of
Art. To try and keep trying.
