To understand this performance, it might be useful to start with its origins. Swayed by the number of the massively deployed police forces during the Yellow Vests protests in France, Castellucci decided to experiment by working, rather than with professional actors, with men recruited through a public call. To emphasize the status of these men, they all wear uniforms of police officers from American cinema. The actors/extras all sign a contract in which they make a commitment to carry out every order they will be given. No questions asked, thoughtlessly. The group, initially consisting of individuals (men equipped with headphones), following an order, transform themselves into a single, organic, well ordered and depersonalized body. The overriding voice (in the handset) turns people into passive automatons. Where does violence come from? Romeo Castellucci joins the discourse on domination, the conscious obliteration of the will and the abdication of personal responsibility. The director’s reflection focuses on the inordinately carefree ease with which we agree to obey, becoming voluntarily ignorant executioners. Brothers, not by blood,
but stained with blood.
