Polish pre-premiere realization of the text by János Háy, Hungarian playwright whose dramas Toruń and Polish audience got to know during the festival CONTACT in 2003. His play “Geza-kid” won the second prize of the jury at the festival. For the second time, also owing to CONTACT, Háy’s text “Uncle Stefek’s son” was performed on Toruń stage in 2007.
In “I promise to love you and be faithful to you ” Háy looks at the marriage, or actually the marriages of forty-year-olds and attempts to diagnose them. He analyzes the changes occurring between the partners after a few, a dozen years of relationship. He shows how the modern world affects the relationships of seemingly the closest people: partners’diverging paths and expectations, searching for different experiences, shattered dreams, unfulfillment, boredom, emotional emptiness, callousness, burnout, midlife crisis, misunderstanding and loneliness in a relationship; maintaining a “complete” (because of the children) but unhappy family, without love and mutual support. This is a picture of forty-year-olds according to Háy.
Our performance may become a kind of theatrical psychotherapy for couples.
