Are you sure about the content of your wardrobe? Be careful, you may be surprised. It is better to look into it. Because it may turn out, as in the play by Michał Walczak, it is there, between coats and moth balls, where God hides. Why Walczakowski’s God lives in the wardrobe? It is not known. Just as it is not known whether he stopped there forever or only for a moment. What we know about him for sure is that he is sometimes funny and likes pizza with olives. And that he never leaves the wardrobe. When God sits in his safe wardrobe, outdoor life goes on: feverish preparations for the arrival of Pope John Paul II are in progress, whose ardent participant is a Deeply Believing Woman, a couple of teenagers – Kama and Adam – using the opportunity that the boy’s parents go for a meeting with the pope, experience first love making. The world outside the wardrobe struggles with everyday problems, takes important decisions, looks for solid values and the divine presence, and does not know that it is at its fingerprints.

“Man with God in the wardrobe”, a play, which was created within the scope of the competition for drama inspired by the life and work of John Paul II published by the Centre for Thought of John Paul II in Warsaw, is a reflection on the heritage of pope’s teaching in both private and collective life of his compatriots. Not without humor, inscribed in contemporary frames, the play on the one hand in a creative way addresses the topic of the presence of John Paul II in the lives of Poles and the presence of God in human life, and on the other hand – it is a little humorous tale about God living in the wardrobe, who is closer than we think. Walczakowski’s God from the wardbrobe hides, maybe because he wants to relax and quietly reflect. Maybe he runs away from people and the world. Or maybe he just sits there because he wants to be close at hand.

From the review:

“Man with God in the wardrobe” turned out to be the acting challenge for Tomasz Mycan, because he played many characters – a clerk, a priest, a policeman. He changed the stage creations representing the high-level stage artistry and proving that he finds himself in every role. (Marta Pomykaj, “Dziennik Teatralny” Toruń, 30.12.2013)
